about JOE
Through schooling and work, I gained footholds in fine art, education, mathematics, and big tech. Fantasy novels got me to love reading, I used to record very noisy music, and I currently write software for a living. My mom taught me to bake, so I typically bring dessert to the dinner party. I have two dogs and a husband, and the four of us watch movies a lot, together, in Queens. It could be horror or comedy or horror-comedy or sci-fi or documentary or Oscar bait or French arthouse.
So in general I try to avoid policing the boundaries between things. Categories make quick explanations, but it’s not how I want to live. I’m creatively promiscuous: I have made quilts, mechanical things, sound installations, videos, and performances. Working in clay at this point in my life is the first time I have relaxed into the particular rhythms of a material, rather than immediately strained against them.
But I am by nature contrarian, so with slabcorp you can expect me to confuse conventions of form, function, and decoration. Some vases are also necklaces, some bowls have holes, some accidents are attributes. Sometimes I figure out how to make things and other times I make things to figure stuff out. Either way, I’m here to enjoy the process. I hope you enjoy the results.
Thanks for visiting me at slabcorpstore.
